Tesla's NEW Updated Model Y is Coming and Cybertruck
Exciting news for Tesla fans! The updated Model Y is on its way with new features. Plus, updates on the highly anticipated Cybertruck release.
Tesla has officially begun the process of opening their supercharger network to other EVs in the United States. This is something that has been a long time coming, with Tesla talking about opening their network for a very long time. It was unclear how they'd go about this simply from a connector perspective, but recent leaks showed us that their magic dock would add a CCS adapter to their superchargers and that would unlock, when initiated from the Tesla app, to charge another EV. Now Tesla has opened its first chargers and added the option to charge a non-Tesla at a supercharger within the app. They first announced it with a Tweet saying select superchargers in the US. Are now open to other EVs. And they shared a video of the process of just how easy it is. You select the charger site, choose your stall, unlock the CCS adapter, plug it in, and charge. Your status is updated live in the app, and when you finish charging, you have a charging summary.
There are very few locations open so far, but plenty of owners have already been seeking them out to give them a try. They are definitely taking it slow and have to install the new charger type or retrofit this magic dock on existing superchargers. So that adds to this process. That said, the process looks pretty fantastic.
They select the site and grab the adapter seamlessly out of the charger. Plugin and the Lightning are charging within a few seconds. If you have experience with third-party chargers, you'll see pretty quickly that this is a game changer. They have managed to make charging a different EV nearly as plug-in charge as charging a Tesla is at a Supercharger.
Here's Mkbhd testing out supercharging. His Rivian R. One T. And here's another Rivian owner charging as well. Tesla will be in the process of opening more Superchargers to all EVs throughout this year and next, and I can't wait wait to see how this goes. It should make any EV far more viable to own all. While Tesla continues rapidly expanding their network exclusively to Tesla, they ultimately plan to open 7500 chargers by the end of 2024 to all EVs.
While this is really great news, it does point to two things. For one, Tesla is giving up an advantage here. How much of an impact it will have could be argued since they are building so many charging stations each week. But it will change things. The great Supercharger experience Tesla owners are used to is going to change, and the decision of buying a Tesla versus another EV won't fully involve the fact that it's stressful to road trip in another EV and easy in a Tesla. Tesla will be making it easier for all EVs, but there will be congestion. The other thing is that while this is exciting, it's already going to create problems with EVs having charge ports at different locations.
Tesla superchargers have a specifically short cable length designed to reach the back left of their cars when back in. While this F 150 Lightning video is exciting to see in video above, what's actually happening here is that this Lightning is taking up two charging stalls. It has to pull forward for the charger to reach. And this charging cable is actually meant for a Tesla that would back into the spot left of this. Now if a Tesla pulls into that spot, it's a dead spot with the charging cable that they're supposed to use being used by the Ford to its right. If that owner tries to take the cable from the next stall over, it won't reach their Tesla charge port. Also on the other side of this Ford is a stall that can't be used by a Tesla. The same is the case when Mkbhd was charging his Rivian and another customer was charging a Lucid Air. Really, really awesome to see and not creating any problems since they're the only ones charging there in this video. But once other customers arrive, it will cause an issue and these cars could each be taking up two charging spots.
I'm really curious to see how this specifically pans out as Tesla opens their chargers. It might be somewhat of a free for all of these chargers open to other EVs. And Tesla owners will end up arriving at a station that says there's availability, only to find they'd need an EV with a charge port on the front in order to charge. Many other EVs are still scaling and Tesla has a huge lead over other companies in terms of the number of EVs on the road in the US. So I'm curious to see if they just don't change a thing and just wait for other automakers to move their charge port.
Tesla is likely going to have by far the best charging network, so Automakers may just move the charge port. So these issues are avoided. We'll have to wait and see. Either way, this is a big moment for electrification and will make a significant impact on the viability of owning any EV.
Next up today, we have a bunch of cyber truck and Model Y updates. First, for the Model Y at Tesla's Investor Day. They had both the Quicksilver and Midnight cherry red options on display. For the time being, these are exclusively made in Berlin, but the fact that they are on display at Tesla's event in the US. Could signal that they may be bringing these to the US. Soon. As of now, they still aren't available to buy here. Here are some great drone shots of the vehicles on display. A new report from Reuters came out saying Tesla is working on a refreshed version of the Model. We've yet to see any proper refresh on the Model Y since its release in early 2020, and this report says that Tesla is working on it with the codenamed Juniper.
According to Reuters the changes to the model y codenamed project juniper at tesla involved the exterior and interior of the crossover electric vehicle with a target of starting production in 2024 there have been heavy rumors about tesla launching a new project highland model and some are speculating that the advances that newly updated platform brings could be what tesla is looking to add to the model y by twenty-twenty four one reason for the delay there would be the significant production pipeline they can't interrupt on the model Y.
"Tesla is aiming to cut production costs and boost the appeal of an electric sedan that first went on sale in 27 people involved in the project have set there will also be changed to the exterior and powertrain performance with a focus on production efficiency." reportedly tesla has asked suppliers for quotes for the revamped juniper model Y and plans for production and October of 2024. That's still a ways off but definitely adds some curiosity as to the current model y plans.
Tesla hasn't even fully introduced the structural pack 46 model y yet and they may already be looking at changes big enough to be considered a revamp Reuters has mixed reliability with their tesla rumors so take this with a grain of salt but it's something we'll be looking out for over the next year it seems it would be after the introduction of the cyber truck of which tesla had the latest on display at investor day tesla's investor day included the presentation which we'll get into but also had a lot on display here's a great video of the latest cyber truck beta prototype on display posted by tesla daily there's a lot to see but this prototype has the full gigantic windshield wiper and triangular side mirror we've assumed are the latest updates. Outside as well the truck has an updated black plastic bed change from the original stainless steel and it seems the bed itself is really coming together in its production form. Eliminating a lot of the incredibly sharp angles that used to have other things to notice on the outside of the cyber truck are the return of the wheel covers from the original prototype the hardware four pin zero cameras and according to Sandy Munro one of the largest air suspension systems he has ever seen. On top of the truck, we can also see roof rack slots for the first time detail this is what point to it really having the details of a production truck there's also very clearly a front camera.

This could be part of the hardware four-point zero sensor suite or simply a front camera as is commonly accessible on trucks of this size it helps with visibility and offroading among other things most of the exterior updates just show that they actually planned to make this thing but the interior brings the biggest changes up front we can see updated seat center console dash and an entirely new yoke this yolk is essentially a slightly squared-off steering wheel and might show that tesla is finding a wheel to be a necessity for a big truck and this prototype there is no instrument cluster display which is a little disappointing to see but it does have a large center touchscreen we assume will be still "17 inches" that might even be passenger lumbar support that can be adjusted on the passenger seat also we can see the cyber truck riding on the doorsill right below the seat.
The interior has various trim changes but additionally, we can see a rear screen this is likely the same screen taken from the model as an x and is something we haven't seen on this truck before it also appears the rear have the ability to fold up for more space in the rear while those seats can fold it appears that tesla has gotten rid of the center bench seat in the front of the cyber truck the updated center console with a wireless charger embedded seems completely fixed. I guess this is ultimately a safety decision as well as a manufacturing simplicity decision .overall with this cyber truck prototype we can see a lot of small tweaks and some notable ones like the updated squared-off wheel instead of a yoke but the big takeaway is that it's actually refined and includes things cars actually need for the production it's a good sign for cyber truck production this year.
